About us

Pleasure and Quality from the Allgäu

Saliter is a traditional company based in Obergünzburg in the Allgäu region. At its only production site, around 190 employees produce high-quality dairy products that are sold in more than 20 countries around the world. In 2023, Saliter processed around 50 million liters of milk and generated an annual turnover of around 65 million euros.

In addition to the classic coffee creamer, our product portfolio in the sterile glass filling area also includes our unmistakable mixed milk drinks. Made by us from Allgäu milk, without added whey! That is very important to us! Another major factor in Saliter’s success is the production of milk powders with different fat contents. Saliter is a trusted and long-standing partner of the food processing industry. We also have two milk powders in 250g packs for household use in our range.

1911

J. M. Gabler is a typical Allgäu “tinkerer” – and thus becomes a pioneer of the dairy industry. As early as the beginning of the 20th century, he developed a technique for producing milk powder, thereby making it possible to preserve milk. The process on a rotating roller is known around the world as the “Saliter process”.

1713

Johann Georg Gabler marries the daughter of saltpetre miner Sebastian Feigele. The profession is called Saliterer – and becomes the model for the company name. The family founds the Gabler-Saliter trading company for the extraction of saltpetre. As nitrate was mainly produced on farms at the time, the Gabler family seized the opportunity and also entered the butter and lard trade. The path to the dairy industry is paved.

Did you know?

Johann Michael Gabler invented milk drying in Obergünzburg

In 1896, J.M. Gabler revolutionized the dairy industry with his invention of milk drying. By developing a process for drying milk, Gabler was able to produce a long-life milk powder that made the transportation and storage of dairy products considerably easier.

Gabler’s invention was based on the principle of roller drying, in which milk was applied to hot rollers and dried quickly. This process made it possible to produce a high-quality milk powder that was ideal for use in various applications.

On March 10, 1896, J.M. Gabler applied for a patent for his process for drying milk and was granted German Imperial Patent No. 88563. The patent application was entitled “Process for drying milk and other liquids”.

The invention of milk drying enabled Gabler-Saliter to strengthen its position in the dairy industry and become a leading supplier of dairy products. Milk drying revolutionized the dairy industry and made it possible to produce long-life dairy products that could be sold worldwide.
